On July 14, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett abruptly ended the violent career of the notorious outlaw William H. Bonney—universally known as Billy the Kid—at Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Tracking the escaped killer to a local ranch, Garrett waited in the pitch darkness of a bedroom before firing two fatal shots into the chest of the unsuspecting 21‑year‑old fugitive.
The haunting, disputed layer of this historic showdown lies in the conflicting accounts of what happened inside that darkened room. Garrett’s official report claimed that Billy entered armed with a revolver, but many local New Mexico oral traditions insist he carried only a small butcher knife to carve meat from the kitchen. Because Garrett fired from complete darkness without identifying himself or offering a chance to surrender, a significant portion of the community viewed the killing as an assassination rather than a lawful arrest—fueling a bitter feud between Garrett and local residents that lasted for the rest of his life.
