Eli Lilly’s Birthday: From Captivity to Healing

On July 8, 1838, Union officer and future pharmaceutical pioneer Eli Lilly was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Before founding the company that bears his name, Lilly answered the call of duty during the Civil War, commanding the 18th Indiana Battery with discipline and resolve.

His life’s direction changed after he was captured by Confederate forces in September 1864 and sent to an officers’ prisoner‑of‑war camp in Enterprise, Mississippi. The harsh conditions he witnessed during his captivity — inadequate food, widespread illness, and the suffering of fellow prisoners — left a permanent mark on him. After the war, Lilly dedicated himself to creating a pharmaceutical company built on purity, consistency, and scientific rigor, determined to produce standard‑setting medicines he wished had been available during the conflict.
