
On August 20, 1923, the USS Shenandoah—America’s first rigid dirigible—rose from the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. Modeled on captured German Zeppelin designs, the 680‑foot silver giant was built from lightweight duralumin and lifted by twenty internal helium cells, making it the first rigid airship to use non‑flammable helium rather than explosive hydrogen.
The launch electrified global media and marked a bold leap into lighter‑than‑air military aviation. Although Shenandoah would tragically break apart in a 1925 storm over Ohio, its debut signaled the beginning of a high‑stakes American effort to master long‑range aerial reconnaissance.
