Benjamin Harrison: A Diadem of Duty

Benjamin Harrison, Civil War general and 23rd President of the United States, was born on August 20, 1833, in North Bend, Ohio. His service commanding the 70th Indiana Volunteer Infantry through the brutal Atlanta Campaign forged a lifelong devotion to national unity and constitutional duty.

In his 1889 inaugural address, Harrison declared:

“God has placed upon our head a diadem… But we must not forget that we take these gifts upon the condition that justice and mercy shall hold the reins of power…”

As president, he championed civil rights protections and signed the Sherman Antitrust Act, believing America’s industrial wealth meant nothing without fairness and opportunity for all. His birth marked the arrival of a leader who viewed public service as a sacred trust.
