Thomas Edison — The Incandescent Breakthrough at Menlo Park

In October 1879, Thomas Alva Edison and his team at Menlo Park, New Jersey, made an important advance in their effort to develop a practical incandescent electric lamp. Their experiments with carbonized cotton thread produced a promising filament and helped focus the laboratory’s continuing work. October 21 became the traditional date associated with the breakthrough, although the laboratory records reveal a continuing series of experiments rather than a single, decisive moment of invention.

The achievement depended on painstaking preparation and testing. Cotton thread was carbonized and mounted inside an evacuated glass bulb, where it could glow under an electric current. In notes recorded on October 22, Edison’s close associate Charles Batchelor described “some very interesting experiments on straight carbons made from cotton thread.” One of the lamps operated for thirteen and a half hours before the team increased the power; it then shone more brightly for another hour before its filament broke.

That result was not yet a finished commercial product, but it gave the team a compelling direction. Experiments continued through the autumn, and by early December the researchers were becoming confident that they had achieved their goal. The significance of the October work lies not in a single bulb suddenly ending the age of darkness, but in the experimental progress that helped bring practical incandescent lighting within reach.
