On September 29, 1923, illustrator and cartoonist Stan Berenstain was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Alongside his wife and lifelong creative partner, Jan Berenstain, he would create the Berenstain Bears, one of the most recognizable and enduring series in American children’s literature.
The couple met in 1941 on their first day of classes at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art. During World War II, Stan served in the U.S. Army as a medical illustrator and cartoonist, documenting reconstructive surgery and producing clinical illustrations. After marrying in 1946, the Berenstains built a successful joint career creating gag cartoons for magazines before turning to children’s books. Their debut Bear Family title, The Big Honey Hunt, appeared in 1962 under the editorial guidance of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
Over the decades that followed, Stan and Jan authored and illustrated more than 300 Berenstain Bears books, chronicling the domestic mishaps, moral choices, and gentle lessons of Papa, Mama, Brother, and Sister Bear. The books became fixtures of early childhood reading in the United States and have sold more than 260 million copies worldwide—helping generations of young readers encounter stories about family, responsibility, kindness, and everyday life.
