
Born August 20, 1913, Roger Wolcott Sperry revolutionized neuroscience through his pioneering research on split‑brain patients. Working at Caltech with collaborator Michael Gazzaniga, Sperry studied individuals whose corpus callosum had been surgically severed to treat severe epilepsy.
By presenting visual and tactile information to each hemisphere independently, Sperry proved that the left and right halves of the brain possess distinct cognitive strengths—analytical language processing on the left, spatial and creative reasoning on the right. His discoveries dismantled long‑held assumptions about unified consciousness and earned him the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
