On July 11, 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a joint resolution requiring the phrase “In God We Trust” to appear on all United States currency. Although the motto had appeared on many coins since the Civil War, this legislation marked the first time Congress mandated its universal placement across both coins and paper money. The rollout began with the redesigned one‑dollar silver certificate in 1957 and soon expanded to every denomination, permanently altering the visual identity of American currency.
The timing was no accident. At the height of the Cold War, lawmakers sought symbolic ways to distinguish the United States from the officially atheist Soviet Union. Embedding a religious motto onto everyday currency transformed routine financial transactions into subtle ideological statements — daily affirmations of America’s spiritual heritage and its opposition to what politicians labeled “godless communism.”
