Campaigning for an Unprecedented Fourth Term

On July 11, 1944, amidst the complex, multi-front logistics of World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made the historic announcement that he would run for an unprecedented fourth term as President of the United States. Addressing the nation during a pivotal moment of the global conflict, Roosevelt stated that while he personally desired to return to private life, he felt a profound duty to remain at the helm as commander-in-chief until the Axis powers were completely defeated and a lasting global peace was secured.

The announcement on July 11 sent massive shockwaves through the political landscape, solidifying an executive run that would never be repeated in American history. Though heavily plagued by rapidly failing health that his administration carefully hid from the public, FDR went on to secure victory in the 1944 election against Thomas E. Dewey. His historic four-term run permanently altered the structural scope of executive power, ultimately inspiring the passage of the 22nd Amendment in 1947 to officially limit future presidents to two terms.
