Mary Grace Canfield was born on September 3, 1924, in Rochester, New York. A stage-trained American character actress, she built a career across theater, film, and television, but she is best remembered as Ralph Monroe, the overall-clad carpenter of Hooterville on CBS’s Green Acres. Canfield appeared in 41 episodes during the sitcom’s 1965–71 run, making Ralph one of the show’s most memorable recurring characters.
Ralph, who worked alongside her brother Alf, was a carpenter known for her practical clothes, deadpan manner, and comic interactions with Hooterville’s eccentric residents. Canfield’s gift was making a supporting role feel distinct: Ralph’s blunt competence and unconventional presence made her an especially memorable part of the series’ absurdist ensemble.
Beyond Green Acres, Canfield worked extensively in theater and made television appearances on programs including The Andy Griffith Show, Bewitched, General Hospital, and The Love Boat. Her career also included film roles, notably in Disney’s Pollyanna and later in Something Wicked This Way Comes.
Canfield largely withdrew from public view after retiring from acting. Her final reported public appearance came in 2005, when she attended the funeral of her longtime Green Acres co-star Eddie Albert with fellow cast members Sid Melton and Frank Cady. She died of lung cancer in Santa Barbara, California, on February 15, 2014, at age 89.
