Washington’s Vote of Thanks: The Monmouth Redemption

On July 7, 1778, the Continental Congress officially offered a formal vote of thanks to General George Washington for his brilliant leadership at the Battle of Monmouth—a brutal clash where oppressive summer heat and military chaos met unmatched American resolve. Following the triumph, his faithful friend, President Henry Laurens, wrote: “Love and respect for your Excellency are impressed on the heart of every grateful American, and your name will be revered by posterity.”

The battle was a redemption arc for Washington, who had to personally strip Major General Charles Lee of command on the battlefield after Lee ordered an unauthorized, chaotic retreat. Adding a deeply personal layer to Laurens’s letter of praise, Henry Laurens’s own son, John Laurens, served directly as Washington’s aide-de-camp during the battle and later challenged the disgraced General Lee to a duel to defend Washington’s honor.
