On November 3, 1978, Diff’rent Strokes premiered on NBC, introducing viewers to Arnold and Willis Jackson, two Black brothers from Harlem taken in by wealthy white businessman Phillip Drummond after the death of their mother, his housekeeper. The sitcom paired family comedy with stories about race, class, and belonging.
Much of its appeal rested on the chemistry of Conrad Bain, Gary Coleman, and Todd Bridges. Coleman’s comic timing helped make Arnold the show’s breakout character, and his signature line—“What’chu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?”—became a pop-culture catchphrase. Across eight seasons—seven on NBC and a final season on ABC—the series balanced warm family moments with storylines addressing serious social issues.
