On September 15, two influential leaders from the United States and Mexico were born: Mexican President Porfirio Díaz in 1830 and U.S. President William Howard Taft in 1857. Raised in very different political and cultural worlds, both ultimately reached the highest executive office in their countries during an era of industrial growth, cross-border investment, and shifting power in North America.
Taft, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, built a distinguished legal and public-service career. He remains the only person in U.S. history to have served both as president and as chief justice of the United States. His public life reflected a strong commitment to constitutional law, administrative government, and political institutions.
Díaz, by contrast, rose to national prominence as a military leader before becoming president of Mexico. He governed for most of the period from 1876 to 1911, a period often called the Porfiriato. His administration promoted railroad construction, foreign investment, and other forms of economic modernization, but it also relied on authoritarian rule and suppressed political opposition.
Their shared September 15 birthday is a striking historical coincidence, especially because the two leaders later met at a turning point in U.S.–Mexico diplomacy. On October 16, 1909, Taft and Díaz met in El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico—the first in-person meeting between sitting presidents of the two countries. The day included formal receptions, a private discussion, and official events on both sides of the border.
The meeting projected cooperation at a time when U.S. economic interests in Mexico and border issues, including the disputed Chamizal tract, shaped relations between the two countries. Within little more than a year, however, the Mexican Revolution began, and Díaz’s long regime collapsed. Their shared birthday remains an intriguing footnote to a more consequential story: a landmark but complicated moment in the history of U.S.–Mexico relations.
