Mission Carmel stands as a beautifully preserved monument to the early, complex history of European settlement and religious expansion along the Pacific coast. Founded originally on June 3, 1770 by Saint Junipero Serra, the mission served as the headquarters for the entire Alta California mission system. The permanent stone church structure seen in historical photographs was constructed by native laborers later in the century, featuring a unique star window and catenary arches that reflected traditional Spanish architecture adapted to the materials of the New American West.
Following the secularization of the missions, the site fell into absolute ruin, its roof collapsing and mud filling the nave, entirely obscuring the final resting place of its famous founder. When a dedicated effort was made in 1882 to locate the tomb, researchers had to use careful archaeological probing to exhume the floorboards. This painstaking search uncovered the redwood coffins of the priests and sparked one of the earliest movements for historic architectural preservation in California.
