The birth of Lucile Ellerbe Godbold on May 31, 1900, in Marion County, South Carolina, brought a pioneer into the world who would grow up to shatter expectations at a time when women were rarely afforded a place on the global athletic stage. When she traveled to Paris for the 1922 Women’s World Games, her historic journey was entirely powered by the collective dreams of her classmates at Winthrop College, who raised the funds to send her there. Miss Ludy rewarded their faith by dominating the international field, winning a bronze in the javelin, a bronze in the 1,000-meter race, and setting a brilliant world record to capture the gold medal in the shot put. Her triumphant performance paved a golden path of inspiration for generations of female athletes who would follow in her powerful footsteps.
