On September 2, 1885, a dark chapter in American labor and racial history unfolded in the coal-mining town of Rock Springs in the Wyoming Territory. After a workplace conflict at Mine No. 6, long-simmering economic tensions and virulent anti-Chinese racism erupted into organized mob violence. White miners, joined by other townspeople and armed with rifles, shotguns, pistols, axes, and knives, attacked their Chinese coworkers and the town’s Chinese community. At least 28 Chinese miners were killed, roughly 15 were wounded, and the attackers looted and burned all 79 homes and buildings in Rock Springs’ Chinatown.
The massacre took place in a labor system shaped by Union Pacific’s use of Chinese workers and by white miners’ resentment toward them. Company labor practices deepened racial division, while anti-Chinese prejudice gave that resentment a deadly outlet. Hundreds of Chinese residents were driven from town, many fleeing into the surrounding countryside with little more than the clothes they wore.
In the aftermath, federal troops were sent to protect the displaced Chinese community. Survivors eventually returned to Rock Springs under military protection, where they faced the grim task of recovering from the destruction and returning to work in the mines. Although 22 white men were arrested, none was prosecuted for the killings, arson, or looting.
The massacre also became a significant diplomatic crisis between the United States and Qing China. Chinese diplomats documented approximately $147,748.74 in lost or destroyed property. After pressure from the Chinese government and U.S. officials, Congress authorized an indemnity payment of about $147,000 to the Chinese government in 1887. The payment addressed property losses—not the deaths, injuries, or broader trauma inflicted on the victims—and the historical record does not clearly establish whether the money ultimately reached the survivors themselves.
