On September 19, 1676, Nathaniel Bacon and his followers burned Jamestown, Virginia, the colony’s capital, to the ground. The destruction was the dramatic climax of Bacon’s Rebellion, an armed uprising rooted in disputes over frontier defense, land, economic strain, and political power between Bacon’s supporters and Royal Governor Sir William Berkeley. A central issue was Berkeley’s reluctance to endorse indiscriminate war against Native peoples, while Bacon and many frontier settlers demanded more aggressive expansion and military action.
After Berkeley abandoned Jamestown for the Eastern Shore, Bacon’s force entered the town. The rebels concluded that they could neither hold the capital nor allow the governor’s loyalists to use it as a base, so Bacon ordered that it be “layed level with the ground.” His men set fire to homes, warehouses, taverns, the statehouse complex, and the town church. Some rebel leaders, including William Drummond and Richard Lawrence, reportedly set fire to their own houses as an example.
The burning destroyed the physical center of Virginia’s colonial government, but it did not secure Bacon’s victory. Bacon died of dysentery on October 26, 1676, depriving the rebellion of its principal leader. Loyalist forces and troops sent from England subsequently restored royal control, and the uprising collapsed.
The event remains one of the most striking episodes in early Virginia history: a violent colonial revolt against an established government, shaped not only by resentment of Berkeley’s rule but also by the settlers’ contested push into Native lands. It has sometimes been remembered as an early antecedent of later American resistance to authority, though that interpretation should not obscure the rebellion’s violence and its consequences for Indigenous communities.
