On September 12, 1944, Barry White—born Barry Eugene Carter—was born in Galveston, Texas. Raised in South Central Los Angeles, he overcame a difficult early life to become one of the defining voices and producers of 1970s soul, R&B, and disco.
Known for his unmistakable deep bass-baritone and richly orchestrated productions, White found international success both as a solo performer and as the leader of the Love Unlimited Orchestra. Songs such as “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe,” “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything,” and the orchestra’s “Love’s Theme” paired sweeping strings with steady, danceable grooves and helped shape the sound of the disco era. “Love’s Theme,” recorded with his 41-piece Love Unlimited Orchestra, became an early disco landmark.
A self-taught arranger and producer, White sold more than 100 million records worldwide and earned two Grammy Awards. His romantic songs, expansive arrangements, and commanding voice made him an enduring figure in popular music.
