The Artist Who Built the Boy Scouts

Eagle Scout Daniel Carter Beard was born on June 21, 1850, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to cementing his history as a co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America, he was an incredibly prolific author and professional artist who provided the iconic illustrations for Mark Twain’s classic books.

Affectionately known to millions of youths as Uncle Dan, Beard spent his childhood sketching the wilderness along the Ohio River, combining his love for art with frontier survival skills. When Mark Twain selected him to illustrate A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Twain famously told him that his detailed drawings perfectly captured the political satire of the text. Beard beautifully channeled this dual passion for storytelling and rugged outdoor adventure into creating the original youth scouting traditions that still endure today.
