On August 3, 1859, the American Dental Association (ADA) was founded in Niagara Falls, New York, when 26 dentists gathered for its first organizational meeting. Prior to this, dentistry in the United States was largely unregulated, with training and practice varying widely. Many extractions and basic procedures were still performed by barbers, blacksmiths, and itinerant practitioners using crude tools, even as formally trained dentists began to emerge in cities.
The ADA went on to champion educational standards, a formal code of ethics, and scientific practice, helping transform dentistry into a respected medical specialty over the following decades. Decades later, the organization’s Seal of Acceptance, launched in 1930, became a trusted mark of safety and efficacy that helped shape how millions of families chose toothpastes and other daily oral‑care products.
