On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft. Two planes struck and destroyed the Twin Towers, while another crashed into the Pentagon near Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, went down in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers resisted. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, including hundreds of first responders.

In the aftermath, Americans united in empathy, solidarity, and resolve—determined to remember, honor, and rebuild.

“But our fathers, imbued with the spirit ot liberty, which a free respiration of the air of the new world inspired, and goaded to desperation by the exactions of oppression, rolled the stone from the door of the sepulchre, where crucified and entombed liberty was slumbering, and it arose to light and life, to cheer, and bless, and give hope to the down-trodden humanity of earth” From an address by the Honorable Daniel S. Dickinson in 1861. The former U.S. Senator became the 27th Attorney General of New York the following year. On September 11, 1800 Daniel S. Dickinson was born in Goshen, Connecticut.
