
On October 28, 1904 the St. Louis Police Department became the first in the US to set up a fingerprint bureau. The police department was inspired by the fingerprinting demonstrated at the St. Louis World’s Fair (shown here) and found it a way to keep track of the swindlers and pickpockets attracted to the large crowds. After his dry goods stores failed in Massachusetts R.H. Macy tried again in New York City, opening a store on October 28, 1858. The first day’s receipts totaled $11.08. John Laurens, who was the son of Founding Father of the United Henry Laurens, was born on October 28, 1754 in Charleston, South Carolina. During the American Revolution he was an aide-de-camp to George Washington, became a prisoner of war and gave his life at the Battle of the Combahee River in 1782.
