Born October 26, 1911 Mahalia Jackson’s powerful voice and stage presence made her the most well-known and highly-regarded gospel singer of the 20th century. An advocate for civil rights, she sang at the 1963 March on Washington and her rendition of “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” at Dr. King’s funeral was legendary. “Pistol Pete”, the mascot of Oklahoma State University is based on westerner Frank Eaton, born October 26, 1860. The author of two books, many of Eaton’s exploits as a scout, cowboy, and lawman cannot be verified in historical records but the colorful character could spin a good yarn. October 26, 1881 saw Doc Holliday and the three Earp brothers square off against the Clanton brothers, the McLaury brothers, and Billy Claiborne near the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona Territory.
