July 23, 1900 — The U.S. Army Transport Rosecrans departs Seattle carrying American troops bound for China as part of the China Relief Expedition during the Boxer Rebellion.

July 23, 1777 – Recruited by Benjamin Franklin, Polish cavalry leader Count Casimir Pulaski arrives in Massachusetts. He wrote to Gen. Washington “I came here, where freedom is being defended, to serve it, and to live or die for it.” He was killed in action fighting the British at Savannah in October, 1779.

A portrait of Elizabeth Hamilton who was the granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton. She became the wife of Union General Henry Halleck.

General Henry Halleck took command over the Union Army during the Civil War on July 23, 1862.
He was Commanding General of the U.S. Army until 1864.

On July 23, 1995, two American astronomers named Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp discover a Great Comet.

Steve Brodie claimed to have jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge on July 23, 1886.
However, despite his testimonies some of his contemporaries said it never happened and believed that he threw a dummy over the bridge.

Ten time pro baseball all-star Harold Peter Henry “Pee Wee” Reese was born on July 23, 1918 in Ekron, Kentucky.

Reese also served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

On July 23, 1962 the Telstar communications satellite, in orbit for two weeks, made the first live, transatlantic television broadcast. Walter Cronkite of CBS and Chet Huntley of NBC were featured. Telstar 1 and 2 are non-functional but still in orbit. Give a listen to the instrumental “Telstar” by the Tornadoes, it’s truly groovy.

On July 23, 1962 Jackie Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

On July 23, 1913, a public auction was held for paraphernalia from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
Bill needed to raise funds after establishing the unprofitable High Jinks gold mine and ranch in Arizona which he established the year prior.

July 23, 1962 — Standing aboard a Paris train with Mamie at his side, Dwight D. Eisenhower waves to the crowd. Their European holiday included a visit to the Normandy battlefield, where Eisenhower had once commanded Allied forces. Joined by grandchildren and traveling in special rail cars from Cherbourg, the former president called it a grandfather’s holiday. Yet as the train rolled into Paris, cheers of ‘Vive Ike’ reminded him—and the world—that history was never far behind.

American actress Gloria DeHaven was born on July 23, 1925 in Los Angeles, California.

She played the role of Mickey Rooney’s sweetheart in the 1948 movie musical Summer Holiday.
