
On April 29, 1776, The Commander-in-chief, from headquarters, New York, forbade all intercourse or correspondence with ships of war and other vessels belonging to or in the service of the King of Great Britain. He wrote to his brother, John Augustine Washington, the same date: “Mrs. Washington is still here, and talks of taking the small-pox (inoculation), but I doubt her resolution.”
Martha would undergo inoculation the following month.

Abram Duryée was born in New York City on April 29, 1815.
On his 46th birthday, Monday, April 29, 1861, his 5th N.Y. Infantry regiment withdrew 800 Model 1842 Springfield Muskets .69 caliber, smoothbore muskets from state stocks.
He then led his famous Zouave regiment in several battles of the American Civil War and he was wounded at Second Bull Run, South Mountain, and Antietam.
In 1873 Abram was appointed Police Commissioner of New York City.

On April 29, 1919, Senator Hardwick (shown) became the target of an assassination attempt due to his involvement in sponsoring the Immigration Act. Followers of radical anarchist Luigi Galleani sent a booby-trapped bomb to his Georgia home. The device detonated when Ethel Williams, a servant in the Hardwick household, tried to open the package, resulting in the loss of her hands and causing severe injuries to Hardwick’s wife, Maude.

Tom Ewell, born April 29, 1909 in Owensboro, Kentucky had a 46-year career on stage, in films, and on television. One of his most memorable roles was in 1955’s “The Seven Year Itch” shown here with co-star Marilyn Monroe.

On April 29, 1915, the USS Wadsworth was launched.
After the U.S. entered WWI, she was the flagship of the first U.S. destroyer squadron (Division 8) that was sent to Europe to patrol the waters off Ireland.
She is named in honor of Alexander Scammel Wadsworth who served as first lieutenant aboard the USS Constitution during the War of 1812. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was Alexander’s nephew.

April Stevens was born April 29, 1929 in Niagara Falls, New York. “Deep Purple”, a duet with her brother, Nino Tempo (shown here) sold a million copies, went to number 1 on the charts in November, 1963 and won a Grammy Award.
