This group of remarkable women served with the American Red Cross Commission to Siberia during a challenging period marked by disease and distress. They returned to the United States aboard the transport ship “Great Northern” on April 28, 1920, after their humanitarian mission. Their work involved providing aid and relief in Siberia, showcasing incredible courage and dedication in the face of harsh conditions.

5th President of The United States, James Monroe, was born on April 28, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

During the American Revolution he was severely wounded at the Battle of Trenton in 1776 and after he recovered he was encamped at Valley Forge during the Winter of 1777-78.

On April 28, 1865, Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train arrived in Cleveland, Ohio. A special building was erected where tens of thousands of mourners came to pay their last respects.

Mexican-American War, American Civil War and Indian War veteran Major General Andrew Jackson Smith was born on April 28, 1815 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

During the Civil War he fought at Vicksburg, Red River, Tupelo and Nashville.

After serving in the Civil War he commanded the U.S. 7th Cavalry (before Sturgis and Custer) and he later became postmaster of St. Louis, Missouri.

U.S. Navy destroyer USS Mullany (DD-528) underway, following overhaul at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard in California on April 28, 1959.

During WWII the USS Mullany was struck by a kamikaze plane that nearly destroyed her after the plane’s impact detonated the ship’s depth charges.

After WWII the destroyer was used by the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. During Vietnam she destroyed or damaged over 50 enemy watercraft.

Born April 28, 1926 Nelle Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most widely-read novels of American literature. Her friend, Truman Capote, took this picture of her in 1960, the year of the book’s publication. It was not until 2015 that Harper Lee had another book published, Go Set a Watchman.

Sam Merwin, Jr., born April 28, 1910 was a Princeton graduate who put aside a promising journalism career to write mysteries and science fiction. His alternate worlds novels like “The House of Many Worlds” were popular and Merwin also edited a number of science fiction quarterly magazines during the 1950s.

American actor Lionel Barrymore, the great-uncle of Drew Barrymore, was born in Philadelphia on April 28, 1878.

You may recall Lionel when he played the sinister role of Mr. Potter in It’s A Wonderful Life.
