Born on August 7, 1869, Mary Frances Winston Newson became the first American woman to earn a PhD in mathematics from a European university. At Göttingen — the global center of mathematical research — women were barred from enrollment, forcing Newson to secure special permission just to attend lectures.
Under the guidance of Felix Klein, she completed her dissertation with high honors, proving that women could master the highest levels of abstract mathematics and opening doors for generations of American female scholars.
