Martin Luther King Jr. — The Nobel Peace Prize

On October 14, 1964, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing his unyielding commitment to achieving racial equality through nonviolent resistance. At thirty-five, the Atlanta-born Baptist minister became the youngest person at the time to receive the prestigious international honor. The announcement came at a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement, just months after the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and amid continuing, often brutal struggles for voting rights across the Deep South.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored King for his nonviolent struggle for civil rights for Black Americans—a philosophy shaped by his Christian faith and the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. Through peaceful marches, economic boycotts, and mass demonstrations, King and the broader civil rights movement drew international attention to the moral contradictions of American segregation. The prize helped elevate a domestic struggle for justice into a global humanitarian cause, affirming King’s conviction that oppression could be confronted without abandoning the moral discipline of nonviolence.

When King accepted the prize in Oslo on December 10, 1964, he delivered a historic address, declaring that he accepted it on behalf of a civil rights movement moving with “majestic scorn for risk and danger.” He emphasized that nonviolence was not passive surrender but a powerful and just force capable of healing a divided society. The international recognition strengthened King’s standing at home as he turned his attention toward the voting-rights campaigns that would soon make Selma, Alabama, a defining battleground for American democracy.
