On September 20, 1980, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Ken Osmond survived a shooting while pursuing a suspected car thief. Before joining the LAPD, Osmond had become widely known for playing Eddie Haskell, the sly and overly polite teenager on the television sitcom Leave It to Beaver. He later left acting for a career in law enforcement and served as an LAPD motorcycle officer.
During the pursuit, the suspect fired three shots at Osmond. Two bullets struck his bullet-resistant vest, while a third ricocheted off his belt buckle. The protective equipment helped save his life, though the encounter was a grave reminder of the risks officers can face during routine patrol and vehicle-theft investigations. Archival captions from the Los Angeles Times collection describe Osmond recounting how he escaped death after being shot by a fleeing car-theft suspect.
The incident became one of the most remarkable chapters in Osmond’s life—not because of his earlier television fame, but because he survived a violent on-duty encounter that could easily have been fatal. It also remains a striking example of the practical value of body armor in protecting law-enforcement personnel.
