Honor Under Fire

On October 16, 1966, Lieutenant General Louis W. Walt presented combat decorations to four brave members of Marine Aircraft Group 16 during a formal ceremony at the Marble Mountain Air Facility in South Vietnam. The personnel received prestigious commendations, including the Silver Star Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross, for their extraordinary heroism and exceptional airmanship during hazardous missions. This moment under the tropical sun captured a brief pause in the intense operational tempo of the helicopter group, which bore the heavy burden of providing close air support, logistics, and medical evacuations across the conflict zone.

Among those honored that morning was Corporal Bobby W. Abshire, who received the Silver Star Medal for his gallantry while serving as a crew chief aboard a UH-1E helicopter with Marine Observation Squadron Two. Earlier that May, during a high-stakes emergency medical evacuation near Da Nang, Abshire braved intense enemy fire to help recover wounded Marines from a hot landing zone. The ceremony, captured on film by Corporal Johnson, stood as a direct testament to the individual sacrifices made by aircrews who repeatedly flew into harm’s way to save American lives on the ground.

The day carried additional institutional significance for the unit, as it coincided with a major change of command at the coastal airfield. Colonel Kenneth L. Reusser officially assumed command of Marine Aircraft Group 16 on October 16, 1966, receiving the unit colors from the outgoing commander, Colonel Richard M. Hunt. This transition highlighted the continuous cycle of leadership and duty defining the American military presence in Vietnam, where fresh commanders inherited the immense responsibility of maintaining morale and technical excellence amid a brutal war of attrition.
