On September 15, 1965, CBS premiered Lost in Space, Irwin Allen’s science-fiction adventure series inspired in part by Johann David Wyss’s classic novel The Swiss Family Robinson. The program followed the Robinson family, selected for a pioneering space mission but stranded far from Earth aboard the Jupiter 2.
Blending family drama, adventure, monsters, futuristic settings, and increasingly colorful special effects, Lost in Space became one of the best-known science-fiction series of the 1960s. Its ensemble included Guy Williams and June Lockhart as John and Maureen Robinson, Billy Mumy as their son Will, Mark Goddard as Major Don West, Marta Kristen as Judy Robinson, Angela Cartwright as Penny Robinson, and Jonathan Harris as the scheming Dr. Zachary Smith.
Although Dr. Smith began as a saboteur, the character gradually became a comic and theatrical counterpoint to the Robinson family. His scenes with Will Robinson and the Robot—often remembered for the warning, “Danger, Will Robinson!”—became among the show’s most enduring elements.
The premiere helped establish Lost in Space as a lasting part of American television culture. Its distinctive Jupiter 2 spacecraft, Robot, imaginative alien worlds, and emphasis on family cooperation have continued to influence science-fiction television, revivals, toys, and popular culture for decades.
