On September 14, 1936, American actor and writer Walter Marvin Koenig was born in Chicago, Illinois. Raised in New York City, Koenig studied acting at UCLA and trained with acclaimed acting teacher Jeff Corey before beginning a career in television and onstage work during the 1960s.
Koenig became internationally known in 1967 when he joined the second season of NBC’s Star Trek as Ensign Pavel Chekov, the young Russian navigator of the USS Enterprise. Introduced during the Cold War, Chekov became a memorable part of the series’ optimistic vision of a future in which people from different nations worked together in space. Koenig played the role in 36 episodes of the original series and later returned as Chekov in the original-cast feature films.
Beyond acting, Koenig built a substantial writing career. He wrote the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode “The Infinite Vulcan,” contributed scripts to television series including Land of the Lost, Family, and The Powers of Matthew Star, and created the comic-book series Raver for Malibu Comics.
Koenig’s portrayal of Chekov remains an enduring part of Star Trek history: a character whose place on the bridge of the Enterprise helped make the franchise’s future feel broader, more international, and more hopeful.
