Benjamin O. Davis Sr. Begins His Historic Climb

On June 18, 1899, Benjamin O. Davis walked into a U.S. Army recruiting station and enlisted as a private in the 9th Cavalry, a Buffalo Soldier regiment. The Army of his era was rigidly segregated, barring Black soldiers from commanding white troops and limiting their advancement. Yet Davis entered with determination, carrying himself with the discipline and dignity that would define his career.

Through decades of impeccable service—from the Philippines to stateside training commands during World War I—Davis built a reputation for integrity and leadership. In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt promoted him to brigadier general, making him the first African American general in U.S. history. His rise opened doors for future generations, including his son, who would lead the Tuskegee Airmen.
