Admiral Arleigh Burke — Destroyer Commander and Architect of the Modern Navy

Born on October 19, 1901, on a farm outside Boulder, Colorado, Arleigh Albert Burke became one of the United States Navy’s most distinguished combat commanders and influential postwar leaders. A 1923 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he earned a postgraduate degree in ordnance engineering before gaining fame during World War II as commander of Destroyer Squadron 23—the “Little Beavers.” In the Solomon Islands, his aggressive tactics helped overcome Japanese advantages in night surface warfare. His enduring nickname, “31-Knot Burke,” originated in a report that his squadron was making 31 knots despite a ship’s boiler problems—a modest speed that became an unlikely emblem of his hard-driving command style.

During the Okinawa campaign in 1945, Burke served as chief of staff to Admiral Marc Mitscher, commander of the Fast Carrier Task Force. On May 11, Mitscher’s flagship, USS Bunker Hill, was devastated by two kamikaze hits. Burke and Mitscher subsequently transferred to USS Enterprise, which was itself struck three days later and put out of action. Burke’s presence aboard both carriers placed him at the center of the deadly attacks confronting the fleet in the war’s final months.

After further service during the Korean War, Burke became Chief of Naval Operations in 1955, serving an unprecedented three consecutive terms through 1961. He championed technological modernization and made the submarine-launched Polaris ballistic missile a central priority, establishing a dedicated organization to bring the program into service. His leadership helped shape a Navy increasingly defined by nuclear propulsion, guided missiles, and a submarine-based nuclear deterrent. His legacy is commemorated in the Arleigh Burke class of guided-missile destroyers, whose lead ship was commissioned in his honor in 1991.
