Transatlantic Star - Heartfelt History™

Transatlantic Star

On October 16, 1925, legendary actress Angela Lansbury was born in London, England. To escape the dangers of the Blitz during World War II, her family relocated to the United States in 1940, where she pursued her passion for the performing arts. After studying acting in New York City, she moved to Los Angeles, where director George Cukor cast her in Gaslight—the film debut that earned her an Academy Award nomination and an MGM contract.

This 1945 portrait captures Lansbury at age twenty, poised between the end of the war and the beginning of a remarkable Hollywood career. By then, she had already received an Academy Award nomination for Gaslight and would soon earn a second consecutive nomination for her haunting performance as Sibyl Vane in The Picture of Dorian Gray. The image reflects the quiet confidence of a young performer whose expressive presence and dramatic range made her an immediate standout in the studio system.

Six years later, in 1951, she became a naturalized American citizen. Her career would span nearly eight decades across film, Broadway, and television, earning her five Tony Awards, an honorary Academy Award, and an enduring place in entertainment history. This portrait beautifully documents a transatlantic life in motion: British-born, Irish-rooted, and ultimately American by choice.
