Twachtman’s unique approach to American Impressionism rejected the bright, high-contrast palettes of his French contemporaries in favor of subtle, muted tonal harmonies. His landscapes and coastal scenes often focused on the atmospheric effects of fog, mist, and snow, capturing the quiet, contemplative moods of the New England countryside. As a leading member of “The Ten,” a group of avant-garde artists who broke away from the traditional art academies, Twachtman helped legitimize impressionist techniques in America, paving the way for modern interpretations of nature.
