The track’s historic climb inaugurating the now-legendary Hot 100 chart signaled the undeniable commercial power of rock and roll and network television. Nelson had showcased the song on his parents’ hit sitcom, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, using the television medium to bypass traditional radio promotion and reach millions of teenagers instantly. Despite the song making chart history, Nelson famously grew to dislike the track because the record label had released it against his wishes, even refusing to put the song on his debut album cover.
