Her historic triumph at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France, became a deeply emotional milestone for the nation. Winning America’s only gold medal of those Games, Fleming single‑handedly symbolized the revival of U.S. figure skating after the tragic 1961 plane crash that had claimed the entire national team.
