Frances Cox Henderson, born July 21, 1820, in Philadelphia, was the exceptionally educated wife of Texas’s first governor, James Pinckney Henderson. Fluent in multiple languages, she played an active diplomatic role alongside her husband during his political career.
After his death, she moved to New Jersey and refused to retreat from public life.
Instead, she founded a home for elderly women without families or financial support—an early and groundbreaking form of social welfare.
Her institution offered dignity and security to women who had been largely invisible in nineteenth‑century society, challenging contemporary expectations of female philanthropy and leadership.
