“The First Family of Country Music” Maybelle, Alvin and Sara Carter are pictured here in 1927, the same year they recorded their historic first tracks. Sara Carter, the group’s lead vocalist and autoharp player, was born on July 21, 1898, in Copper Creek, Virginia.
Sara’s haunting, raw alto voice became the emotional core of the group, proving that a woman could anchor a commercial recording act. The 1927 Bristol Sessions where they debuted are widely considered the “Big Bang” of modern country music.
Though her personal life was marked by heartbreak and internal friction within the group, Sara’s recordings laid the DNA for bluegrass, folk, and country music.
