On July 18, 1863, the Union Army’s legendary 54th Massachusetts Infantry, a pioneering regiment of Black soldiers led by white officers, spearheaded a ferocious evening assault on the heavily fortified Confederate stronghold of Fort Wagner on Morris Island, South Carolina. Under the direct command of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the men charged across an open, sandy beach into a devastating wall of artillery and rifle fire. Though the assault ultimately failed to capture the fort and resulted in catastrophic losses for the regiment, the spectacular bravery displayed by the troops fundamentally challenged racist skepticism surrounding the fighting capability of Black soldiers.
The deeply heartfelt, private dimension of the 54th’s assault centers on the heroic action of Sergeant William Harvey Carney during the chaotic retreat from the fort’s parapet. When Colonel Shaw was shot dead and the regiment’s flag‑bearer fell, Carney lunged forward through a hail of bullets to catch the American flag before it could touch the dirt. Despite being shot multiple times, Carney crawled back to Union lines while clutching the banner to his chest, famously whispering to his surviving comrades, “Boys, the old flag never touched the ground!” Carney’s physical resilience that night eventually made him the first African American soldier to earn the Medal of Honor.
News of the 54th’s courage spread rapidly through Northern newspapers, galvanizing public support for the recruitment of additional Black regiments. Within months, tens of thousands of African American soldiers enlisted, transforming the manpower of the Union Army and altering the trajectory of the war. Fort Wagner became a symbol not of defeat, but of the moment Black soldiers proved their undeniable place in the fight for freedom.
