Without facing any initial resistance from Spanish coastal defenses, American forces began landing thousands of troops on the beaches of Daiquiri, Cuba. The operation quickly dissolved into a logistical nightmare of epic proportions due to a complete lack of proper docks and heavy surf. Soldiers were forced to wade through the crashing waves or scramble from tossing small boats onto a decaying iron pier, creating a scene of absolute pandemonium on the shoreline.
The most bizarre aspect of the landing was the treatment of the military horses and mules. Lacking any specialized landing craft for animals, crew members simply pushed the terrified livestock directly into the open ocean from the transport ships, leaving them to swim for their lives toward the distant sound of bugles on the beach. While many animals successfully made it ashore, dozens became disoriented in the waves and drowned, highlighting the severe lack of preparation that plagued the early stages of the conflict.
