In July pilot Gail Halvorsen, shown here, began dropping chocolate bars by small parachutes to children gathered near Tempelhof Airfield. Union General John Grubb Parke was born near Coatesville, PA on September 22, 1827. He served at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg and other battles. 22 years after the Civil War he became Superintendent at West Point.
