On August 31, 1969—one day before his 46th birthday—retired heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano was killed when the Cessna 172 in which he was traveling crashed near Newton, Iowa, during bad weather. The accident also killed the pilot, Glenn Belz, and Marciano’s friend, Frankie Farrell. The plane had been attempting to reach Des Moines when worsening conditions forced a change in plans.
Marciano’s death stunned the boxing world and fans across the United States. He had retired in 1956 with a perfect professional record of 49 victories, no defeats, and 43 knockouts—still the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated.
