On September 24, 1929, Lieutenant James “Jimmy” Doolittle—a U.S. Army Air Corps aviator and aeronautical engineer—made the first complete airplane takeoff, flight, and landing by sole reference to instruments. At Mitchel Field on Long Island, New York, Doolittle flew a specially instrumented Consolidated NY-2 Husky biplane from beneath a canvas hood that blocked his view outside the cockpit. He took off, flew a prescribed course, and returned to land after a flight of about 15 minutes without using visual references to the ground or horizon.
The demonstration depended on a new combination of cockpit and radio-navigation technology. A sensitive Kollsman altimeter supplied altitude information, while the Sperry artificial horizon and directional gyroscope gave Doolittle a dependable indication of the aircraft’s attitude and heading. Radio-range and marker-beacon equipment helped guide him on course and align him for the landing. Lt. Benjamin Kelsey occupied the front cockpit as a safety pilot but did not fly the aircraft.
Before such demonstrations, pilots who entered cloud, fog, or darkness could lose their visual sense of level flight and become dangerously disoriented. Doolittle’s flight showed that, with appropriate instruments, radio aids, training, and disciplined trust in the panel, a pilot could control and navigate an airplane even when the outside world could not be seen.
The achievement did not eliminate the hazards of bad weather overnight, but it was a decisive milestone in the development of instrument flight rules, radio navigation, and the all-weather capabilities that later became essential to commercial and military aviation. Its anniversary marks a turning point: the moment instrument-guided flight was convincingly demonstrated from takeoff through landing.
