On September 24, 1977, the romantic comedy-drama anthology series The Love Boat made its regular prime-time network debut on ABC. Produced by Aaron Spelling, the series was set primarily aboard the Pacific Princess, a real Princess Cruises ship, and followed its familiar crew: Gavin MacLeod as Captain Merrill Stubing, Bernie Kopell as Dr. Adam “Doc” Bricker, Fred Grandy as Gopher Smith, Ted Lange as bartender Isaac Washington, and Lauren Tewes as cruise director Julie McCoy.
Each hour-long episode combined several interwoven stories of romance, comedy, and occasional drama, featuring a rotating lineup of prominent guest stars. The show’s breezy escapism, exotic destinations, and glamorous vision of life at sea made it a defining part of ABC’s Saturday-night schedule and a widely recognized fixture of late-1970s and 1980s popular culture.
After three television movies laid the groundwork, The Love Boat ran for nine regular seasons, ending on May 24, 1986. Its partnership with Princess Cruises gave millions of viewers a vivid introduction to cruise vacations and is widely credited with helping expand public interest in cruising beyond its older stereotype as a pastime mainly for honeymooners and retirees. The series’ success also helped make Princess Cruises—and the phrase “Love Boat”—part of the popular imagination.
