On September 21, 1788, Margaret Smith Taylor—who would become First Lady of the United States as the wife of President Zachary Taylor—was born in Calvert County, Maryland. Raised in a prominent Maryland family, she married Zachary Taylor, then a young U.S. Army lieutenant, in 1810.
For the next several decades, Margaret Taylor’s life was shaped by the demanding, mobile realities of an Army family. She accompanied her husband to frontier garrisons and remote military posts as the United States expanded westward, creating homes under difficult conditions and providing stability for their growing family. Those years also brought profound loss: two of the Taylors’ young daughters died of illness while the family was stationed on the frontier.
As Zachary Taylor advanced through the Army and gained national fame during the Mexican-American War, Margaret remained closely tied to the private sphere of family life. Her long experience at isolated military posts may help explain her reluctance to embrace the social and political demands that accompanied her husband’s election to the presidency in 1848.
Margaret reportedly viewed her husband’s entrance into national politics with anxiety. After moving into the White House, she largely avoided the public entertaining traditionally expected of a First Lady. Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Bliss, assumed many of the administration’s formal hostess responsibilities instead. Margaret nonetheless remained a private source of support for the president during a period of fierce sectional conflict.
Zachary Taylor’s sudden death in July 1850 was a devastating loss for her. Margaret Taylor left Washington afterward and died two years later, in 1852.
