On September 20, 1973, one of the most consequential sporting events in modern American culture unfolded at the Houston Astrodome. In the celebrated “Battle of the Sexes,” tennis champion Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs, a 55-year-old former Wimbledon champion who had publicly belittled women’s tennis, in straight sets: 6–4, 6–3, 6–3. The match drew 30,472 spectators—then the largest crowd ever to watch a tennis match in the United States—and an estimated 50 million television viewers in the United States, with roughly 90 million watching worldwide.
The event was far more than a high-profile exhibition. Riggs had promoted the match through openly chauvinistic claims that even elite women players could not compete with a male player of his generation. For King, then 29, the stakes extended beyond her individual record: a loss could have been used to reinforce stereotypes about women’s athletic ability and the value of women’s sports. Through superior conditioning, disciplined tactics, and relentless pressure, King wore down Riggs and transformed the event into a public rebuke of those assumptions.
King’s victory became a defining cultural moment in the women’s rights movement and helped elevate the visibility and credibility of women athletes. It also complemented her broader activism for equity in tennis. Earlier in 1973, after pressure from King and other players, the U.S. Open became the first major tennis tournament to award equal prize money to its women’s and men’s champions. Title IX had already become law in 1972, and King had supported its passage; over subsequent decades, the law expanded educational and athletic opportunities for girls and women in federally funded schools.
