On September 18, 1905, legendary Hollywood actress Greta Garbo was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden. Raised in modest circumstances, she began her career in Swedish cinema before moving to the United States in the mid-1920s. There, she became an international star, successfully carrying her mystique and screen presence from silent films into the era of sound.
Garbo left an enduring mark on film history through acclaimed performances in classics including Anna Karenina and Camille. Celebrated for her enigmatic persona and fiercely protected privacy, she retired from acting in 1941, while still in her thirties. She later made New York City her permanent home and became a naturalized U.S. citizen on February 9, 1951.
