On September 17, 1900, J. Willard Marriott—founder of the Marriott Corporation—was born in Marriott, Utah. Raised in a large homesteading family, he developed endurance and discipline early through sheep herding and demanding farm work. He later pursued higher education, graduating from the University of Utah in 1926.
In 1927, three decades before opening his first hotel, Marriott and his wife, Alice, opened a nine-seat A&W root-beer stand in Washington, D.C. The business was designed for customers seeking relief from the city’s summer heat. Marriott soon added hot food, and the venture evolved into the Hot Shoppes restaurant chain. Its emphasis on service, cleanliness, consistency, and employee commitment became central to the company’s culture.
In 1957, Marriott entered the lodging business with the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia, the company’s first hotel property. From those beginnings, the business grew from a local restaurant operation into Marriott International, one of the world’s largest hospitality companies.
The scale of that legacy remains evident today: Marriott International reported $23.713 billion in revenue for 2023. Marriott’s story—from a modest Washington root-beer stand to a global hospitality enterprise—remains a notable example of American entrepreneurship and the power of operational discipline.
